Black Lakes is a portrait of a land held in an in-between state, between what it was and what it has not yet become.

Between 2022 and 2025, Simon Nicoloso visited the Thetford Mines region in southern Quebec five times, the former asbestos capital of the world. People live there, and have always lived there, in contact with this ore. He found a place still alive, where the mining industry that gave the region its existence has ceased without taking with it the material present in the soil, in the tailings bordering the houses, and in daily habits. What it left behind is still there, yet no longer an event.

Black Lakes is less a book about asbestos than about a land in limbo, where danger has become ordinary through the act of living with it. An indistinct state, which is neither post-industrial tragedy nor territorial rebirth. The book thus questions what happens to fear when faced with the familiar.

The book is accompanied by a text from Alice Loumeau and Valentin Bansac (the collective MATTERS.xyz), architects and researchers, who investigate the mythological imagery of this fiber once celebrated for its near-magical properties.
